The time of year when summer becomes fall feels so magical. The air cools as the days grow shorter. The languid energy of summer has already faded as we return to the routines and structure of autumn. On September 22, we reach the fall equinox, a seasonal turning point when day and night meet in near-perfect balance before we move into the darker half of the year.

The fall equinox is a time for harvest and gratitude. Spiritually, it offers us an opportunity to do the same: to take stock of what has grown in our own lives, celebrate what we’ve created, and consider what we no longer need to bring with us into the season ahead.

The equinox teaches us about balance, too. Balance is always in motion. It is meant to change and be fluid. We don’t need to keep every part of our lives perfectly equal all the time. Nature doesn’t even do that! The equinox itself is a fleeting moment. The scales balance, and then they begin to tip again. Our lives can do that, too.

What Is the Fall Equinox?

The fall equinox marks the official beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. It happens each September, when the sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are roughly equal in length. From here, the days continue getting shorter as we move toward winter. The equinox is a turning point in the year, bringing us out of the long days of summer and into a season of longer nights, cooler weather, and change.

For our ancestors, this point in the year was intrinsically connected to the harvest. The growing season was ending, and people gathered and stored food as they prepared for the colder, darker months ahead. Many cultures around the world have developed their own traditions and celebrations around harvest time, and modern witches and Pagans observe the autumn equinox as Mabon, one of the seasonal celebrations on the Wheel of the Year. You don’t need to follow any particular spiritual tradition to work with the magic of this moment. Just paying attention to the changing season can become a ritual in itself.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Fall Equinox

So much of our culture encourages us to move on to the next thing immediately. When we accomplish something, we must ask what’s next. We reach a goal, and before we have even celebrated it, we create another one. We grow and change and heal so gradually that sometimes we don’t even recognize how far we’ve come. Harvest season asks us to take notice! What has grown in your life since the beginning of the year? What did you nurture that is finally beginning to bear fruit? What surprised you? What are you proud of? Your harvest doesn’t have to be something enormous or visible to anyone else. It could be that you’ve become more confident, or you made it through something difficult. Maybe you made a new friendship, started taking better care of yourself, set a boundary, learned something, or became a little more comfortable being who you are. All of these are incredible accomplishments to acknowledge and celebrate.

Now, not every seed we plant grows, and the equinox can also be a beautiful time to acknowledge what didn’t happen, what changed direction, or what you don’t want anymore. Nature doesn’t cling to every leaf, and we don’t have to bring everything with us just because it once was something we thought we wanted or needed.

Meditating on balance is such an important aspect of this seasonal shift. The fall equinox reminds us that balance isn’t a destination we reach and stay in forever. Light and darkness meet, and then everything keeps moving. There will be seasons when your work requires more of you, seasons when relationships take priority, seasons when you need more rest, and seasons when you have enormous amounts of energy to give. None are more important than the other, and all offer valuable information to support you in what’s next. Instead of asking, “Is my life perfectly balanced?” try asking: What needs a little more of me right now? And what could use a little less?

A Fall Equinox Harvest Ritual

For this ritual, you’ll need an apple, two candles, a piece of paper, and something to write with. Use whatever color candles you have on hand or that feels right to you, but I suggest choosing one white candle to represent the light and one black candle to represent the darkness. Place the two candles in front of you with the apple between them. Light both candles and take a moment to look at the two flames. Think about everything that has happened since the beginning of the year. You don’t need to judge any of it as good or bad. This is just a practice of noticing what has grown, what has changed, and what brought you here.

On one side of your paper, write: WHAT I AM HARVESTING and list everything you want to acknowledge and celebrate. These can be accomplishments, relationships, lessons, moments of courage, changes you’ve made, or anything else that comes to mind. On the other side, write: WHAT I AM LEAVING BEHIND and write down anything you don’t want to continue holding onto in this next season. This could be an expectation, an old story about yourself, a habit, resentment, pressure, or something you’ve outgrown. Now cut your apple horizontally through the middle. When you open it, you’ll find that its seeds form the shape of a five-pointed star, a symbol of the elements and the interconnectedness of nature. Hold one half of the apple and read through everything you are harvesting. Say thank you for each one, including yourself and the version of you who helped bring it into being. Then look at what you are leaving behind, and acknowledge that you don’t need to bring everything with you everywhere you go. When you’re finished, extinguish both candles. Eat the apple to symbolically take the sweetness of your harvest with you into the season ahead. Dispose of the paper with what you are leaving behind in whatever way feels right to you, and tuck the “harvesting” half somewhere you can return to when you need a reminder of how much has already grown.

What Each Zodiac Sign Can Focus on This Fall Equinox

The fall equinox coincides with the sun entering Libra, the zodiac sign associated with the celestial scales of balance, fairness, and reciprocity. This makes the equinox a beautiful moment to notice where your own internal gauge may need adjusting.

Aries: You don’t always have to do everything alone. This equinox asks you to look at your relationships and notice where there is actual reciprocity. Who shows up for you? Where could you allow yourself to receive as much as you give?

Taurus: You may love knowing what to expect, but even a routine that once worked for you can start to feel a little stale. If you’ve been going through the motions lately, switch something up. You don’t need to completely overhaul your life! A few small adjustments might be exactly what you need to feel excited about your days again.

Gemini: When was the last time you did something simply because it sounded fun? Not because it was productive, good for you, or something you could turn into a project later. The equinox wants you to make more room for pleasure, creativity, flirting, hobbies, and whatever else makes you excited to be alive. Follow your curiosity somewhere unexpected. You do not need to justify having a good time.

Cancer: Home should be somewhere you can actually exhale. As we move into the darker half of the year and begin spending more time indoors, take a look around yours. Is there anything making your space feel heavier than it needs to? Clean out a drawer, move the furniture around, buy yourself flowers, and finally get rid of the thing you hate looking at. Make your home feel more like the cozy sanctuary you desire.

Leo: Say what’s been on your mind! If you’ve been waiting for someone to magically know what you want, how you feel, or what you need from them, you could be waiting a very long time. The equinox is asking you to be a little more direct. Your words can change the energy of a situation, but only if you actually use them.

Virgo: Before you race toward your next goal, can you give yourself a minute to appreciate what you’ve already done? Look at what you have now that you once wished for, and let yourself be proud of that before deciding what comes next.

Libra: Happy birthday! The equinox begins your season and turns some of the attention back toward you. Consider who you are becoming in this next trip around the sun and whether the choices you’re making still reflect that person. You’re allowed to change your mind, your priorities, and even the way you see yourself.

Scorpio: Keep something just for yourself. Giving your new endeavors a little privacy will help you understand what you really want before other people’s opinions get involved. Trust what you know, even if you’re not ready to put it into words yet.

Sagittarius: Spend more time with people who make your world feel bigger. The friend who sends you down a fascinating rabbit hole, talks you into trying something new, or reminds you of a dream you almost forgot about is especially good medicine right now. And if certain friendships or spaces have started to feel limiting, you’re allowed to branch out. The people we surround ourselves with can change what we believe is possible for our own lives.

Capricorn: There will always be one more thing you could be doing, but your life can’t only happen in the leftover time after everything else is finished. Think about where work has taken up more than its fair share, and shift your focus. Make plans with your friends, take the afternoon off, or prioritize doing something that has absolutely nothing to do with being productive. The work will still be there when you get back.

Aquarius: Get out of your usual orbit. You might be craving a change of scenery more than you even realize, and you don’t necessarily need a huge life change, but you do need something that reminds you there’s a much bigger world beyond your usual routine.

Pisces: The equinox asks you to look at what and how you share your energy with others. Where have the boundaries become blurry? Where could there be more trust? What’s actually yours and what isn’t? It’s valuable to understand where you end and someone else begins. You can care about someone very much without taking on everything they are going through.

Find Your Own Fall Magic

However you celebrate the fall equinox, make it your own. Cook something with what’s in season, spend some time outside, light a candle, or just take the time to notice the world changing around you. Everything is temporary; autumn won’t be here forever, and that is part of what makes it so magical. Enjoy what this season has to offer while it’s here.
