Tarot Court Cards: What Each Knight Means When You Pull It
Make us a preferred source
In the previous installment, you met the Pages, tarot’s students, and learned that doing things messily and imperfectly is a necessary part of growing up. Now, let’s take this concept a step further. What happens once you’ve matured enough to go out into the world and flaunt your new skills, but still make mistakes? It’s time to get to know the apprentices of the tarot court cards: the Knights.
What the Knights Represent in Tarot
The Knights in the tarot have the invincible mentality (and luck) of teenagers. They’re incredibly resilient and therefore willing to test the limits of their physical bodies. They contain an infinite well of stamina and energy to wield, but are prone to misdirecting it. A well-intentioned Knight is susceptible to causing harm if they get lost in their own ego.
They may not be babies anymore, but their sense of self is still fluid. They’re getting a sense of what’s meaningful to them, where their values lie, and the kinds of adventures they’d like to have.
You can hold the Knights to a higher standard of knowledge and maturity than the Pages. This stage is when lessons are learned the hard way. It’s when you learn that your actions have real consequences.
What It Means to Pull a Knight Tarot Card
You may pull a Knight card in a tarot reading when you’re feeling extremely motivated to move toward a goal. You’re ready to take action and see what you’re capable of. At the very least, you have the bones of a plan and are willing to let fate take care of the rest.
Because the Knights are the extremists of the tarot, take a healthy dose of caution when they appear in a reading. Ask yourself if the influx of energy feels more helpful or harmful. Are you using it to create something meaningful, or to prove a point? Are you moving toward your goal or simply satisfying your need for instant gratification?
Check your impulses. Reel it in if need be, but don’t let this moment pass you by. Use it wisely.
The 4 Knight Tarot Court Cards and Their Elements
The imagery below follows the Rider-Waite-Smith deck.
Knight of Swords: Air
The Knight of Swords has something to say, and they’re not afraid to say it. You can see they’re moving quickly through powerful winds by the bent trees and jagged clouds in the background. The horse charges full force ahead, looking back at their visibly angry Knight with tangible suspicion. Ego seems to be running the show here.
This card often shows up in readings when someone is spewing harsh words. It’s a signal to pay attention to your tone. Delivery is everything. It’s good to speak your mind and establish boundaries, but a sharp tongue could destroy any common ground.
The Knight of Swords can also arrive when you feel the need to defend yourself or others. You may feel called to speak up on behalf of those who are suffering, no longer able to tolerate injustice. Use your energy wisely. Direct it where it will land.
Used in a healthy way, this Knight’s energy can shift the room toward an important collective goal. By using your privilege, knowledge, or physical abilities, you can influence those around you for good. If your ego goes unchecked, however, you might say the wrong thing to the wrong person and burn a bridge.
You still have plenty to learn. Even if you make a big mistake, use it as a learning opportunity and choose to do better next time.
Knight of Cups: Water
The Knight of Cups has a tender heart and cares less about what’s logical than what feels good. You see them atop their horse, exploring the land before them. They appear to be approaching a river crossing, carefully considering how they’ll keep the contents of their upright chalice balanced. They’re moving slowly and intentionally, knowing that feelings are fluid and anything can change in the blink of an eye.
This Knight may arrive in the form of a message, an invitation, or an offering. Something could be arriving that has the power to make your heart flutter with excitement. Intuition is heightened, softness is spreading, and vulnerability is permeating the cracks of everything you touch. When it pops up in a spread, ask yourself if you feel more aligned with the receiver or the giver of this opportunity.
This Knight feels like getting asked out on a date by the person you’ve been thinking about for months. It shows up when you receive an email from a study abroad program that’ll allow you to travel solo. It could be the feeling you get when you submit an intimate piece of creative writing to a publication. If you’re putting your heart on the line, that’s the Knight of Cups coming into play.
Be wary of rose-colored glasses when you’re in the presence of the Knight of Cups. With your heart directing the flow of your energy, emotions could cloud your judgment. Feelings can offer wisdom, but sometimes you can only see what you want to see.
Ultimately, you can’t live in fear of having your heart broken. It’s better to experiment in love and be let down than to never have tried at all.
Knight of Wands: Fire
The Knight of Wands gallops in, guns blazing. They’re not the type to wait for permission. When they’re ready to move, they move. Full of passion and probably a healthy dose of attitude, they bring the heat wherever they go. This Knight’s horse rears up, reflecting the rider’s restless energy and confidence.
This Knight may arrive in a reading when you’ve found a creative spark and feel driven to see something through to completion. This can be invigorating and transformative, so long as you’re tending to yourself and balancing out the fire with stillness and quiet. It can be easy to lose yourself in the intensity of the Knight of Wands.
You may also see it show up when someone is coming on to you very strongly. They’re enamored with you and can’t get enough. The vibe is hot and heavy. That can be totally enticing and dreamy at first, but it isn’t necessarily sustainable.
Have fun, but check in with your intuition. Are you neglecting other relationships, hobbies, and work just to maintain this electric connection? Are you vibing on a personal level? They may be promising you the world, but can they actually follow through? Remember to take a step back and examine the bigger picture.
The heat that pulses through this Knight can be as blinding as bright white light. When they’re fired up, they don’t know how to quit. They can push themselves to their own detriment. When angry, they can be difficult to calm down. Logic gets lost as their vision narrows to their own perspective.
If you pull this card when you’re worked up, take some time to breathe deeply. Don’t waste your energy on vitriol.
Knight of Pentacles: Earth
The Knight of Pentacles approaches life more steadily and methodically than some of their counterparts. You see them pause to consider the road ahead, taking stock of the resources and energy at their disposal. They value the pentacle they carry and want to use it wisely. The landscape behind them is quiet farmland. They have time to proceed with intention.
In a reading, you could see the Knight of Pentacles when there’s a long-term goal you’re prepared to approach. You could be saving for a home, paying off debt, or pitching a business to potential investors. This Knight is a welcome sign of steady forward movement.
In a love reading, this card might appear when someone is offering you a life together built on security and stability. It can suggest that they’re serious about you, with mutual intent to invest in the relationship long term. There’s the potential for something of real substance here.
Take the Knight of Pentacles as a sign of encouragement. Trust that you’ll figure things out one step at a time. Have realistic expectations for yourself and others, and do what you can every day to work toward where you want to be.
